Paper awards are being offered for papers focusing on:

-Southeast Asia

**Please only submit to one category and indicate in your email which category for which you want to be considered**

If you are not submitting for a paper award or there is not a category offered for your paper, your conference paper deadline is MONDAY, March 2, 2015.

When submitting your conference paper, please e-mail to gradconf@hawaii.edu with the subject 2015 SPAS Paper Submission

Those who were selected for an award have been notified. If you have not received a message regarding a travel award please understand that we cannot offer you an award.

If you need an official conference invitation letter for Visa purposes, please contact us and we will send you an updated letter with the necessary information you need to file for your visa.

We are in the processing of placing presenters in panels of 3-4 people per panel. Panels will be organized to best match presenters topic, area and discipline. Each panel session will be 90 minutes and moderated by a faculty member from UH Mānoa.
Each presenter will be given a total of 20 minutes to present (generally 15 minutes for the presentation and an additional 5 minutes for questions).

The East-West Center, adjacent to UH Mānoa, accepts reservations for accommodations during the conference at very affordable rates. They are conveniently located within a very short walking distance (either right next door or a few buildings down) from the conference location. Please check the website and call them for up-to-date availability.

Tip: When searching for lodging through something like Expedia, keep in mind that hotels that are in Waikiki are more expensive than hotels outside of Waikiki.

Ala Moana Hotel, for example, is located closer to Waikiki and is generally less expensive than Waikiki. Either way, UH Moana campus is accessible from both Waikiki and Ala Moana via bus or a relatively inexpensive taxi.

The following meals will be provided to conference attendees:

March 18th (Wed) – Dinner

March 19th (Thur) – Breakfast and Lunch

March 20th (Fri) – Breakfast and Lunch
**Please let us know if you have any special dietary restrictions (we will of course be offering vegetarians options)**
Please feel to write us if you have any further questions regarding the conference. We look forward to seeing you at the conference next month!

2015 Conference Flyer ImageEDIT2

Against the Current: Transforming Perspectives in Asia

Call for Papers: 2015 SPAS Graduate Student Conference
on Asian Studies

The School of Pacific and Asian Studies (SPAS) at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM) welcomes papers, performances, and panel proposals for its 26th annual graduate student conference. The conference will be held at the Center for Korean Studies on the UHM campus in Honolulu, HI on March 18-20, 2015. The theme this year is “AGAINST THE CURRENT: TRANSFORMING PERSPECTIVES IN ASIA.”

As this year’s theme indicates, we are interested in accepting papers, performances, and panel proposals that continue, change, and/or contest disciplinary and regional approaches to the study of the Asia/Pacific. With this goal in mind, we also encourage those with a background in the arts to apply with performance or paper proposals.

We are especially looking for papers that:

  •  Involve any original research in all areas of Asia and Asian studies
  •  Incorporate interdisciplinary methods and frameworks
  •  Engage comparative studies or transnationalism
  •  Explore new and emerging trends in Asian Studies
  •  Present Asian performance practices

We are pleased to announce this year’s speaker is Dr. Rhacel Parrenas, Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies and Chair of the Department of Sociology at the University of Southern California.

She is known for her work on women’s labor and migration in economic globalization. Her latest book is  Illicit Flirtations: Labor, Migration and Sex Trafficking in Tokyo (Stanford, 2011).

Please complete the application form according to the listed guidelines and instructions, and submit it by JANUARY 10, 2015. The form may be accessed HERE.

Additionally, all accepted papers/panels will have discussants, so presenters should be prepared to submit their papers by February 16, 2015.

In addition to awards for distinguished papers, limited partial travel grants to the conference site may be available.

If you have any questions, please contact the conference planning committee at gradconf@hawaii.edu.

For more information, please refer to our Facebook page, “SPAS Graduate Conference on Asian Studies” or our website at https://spasconference.wordpress.com/
